Types of Generative AI
We will briefly cover two types of generative AI:
Large Language Models
ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer)
ChatGPT is a language-based chatbot developed by OpenAI that generates text based on the users' prompts and the context of the conversation over time. The use of prompt engineering at each stage of the conversation allows the user to direct or navigate the interaction and to tailor the answers to best suit their needs (i.e. length of answer, details, language, and so forth).
Bing is an AI chat tool featured in Microsoft Edge. It provides users with an interactive chat experience as they search the web, allowing them to personalize, refine, and improve upon answers throughout the process. It can also be used for AI driven image creation.
Bard is Google's AI driven chat-based tool that integrates with Google Apps. Along with text answers to the users' prompts, Bard can also provide citations to support the information.
Multimedia
DALL-E is a text-to-image model that generates art, images, or media based on descriptions through text provided by the user. Capable of creating images in multiple styles (painting, photorealistic, emoji, etc.), DALL-E is currently in its 3rd version and is integratable with ChatGPT.
Midjourney
Midjourney is a free AI text-to-image model that creates images based on natural language prompts. Midjourney is only available through a Discord bot on the Discord server; the artist/user generates images through bot commands. A web interface is in the works.
Artbreeder is a collaborative AI text-to-image generator which allows users to share and create iterations on each other's work with the goal of building a collective of artists.
How does AI fit into academics?
Artificial intelligence can be a great resource for students, especially while working on research papers or final projects. Using AI tools at the beginning of the research process can be particularly beneficial. If used responsibly and ethically, it can help:
