Pittsburgh: The Story of an American City follows Pittsburgh from its frontier beginnings through its evolution into the most heavily industrialized city in the world, to the city's renewal of itself as "America's Most Livable City."

Homestead, first published in 1910 as one volume in the classic Pittsburgh Survey, describes daily life in a community that was dominated economically and physically by the giant Homestead Works of the United States Steel Corporation. Homestead, just across the Monongahela River from Pittsburgh, developed as a completely separate city -- a true mill town settled by newer immigrants and shaped in its attitudes by the infamous Homestead Strike of 1892.

This book is one of a series relating Western Pennsylvania history written under the direction of the Western Pennsylvania historical survey sponsored jointly by the Buhl foundation, the Historical society of western Pennsylvania, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Thirteen historians bring their various specializations to the single case study of Pittsburgh, providing perspective on the city itself and on the general process of urbanization. They explore many aspects of Pittsburgh's cultural and institutional life: race, class, gender, politics, occupation, and infrastructure.
